Commission FAQs

What subjects will you illustrate?
I specialize in art nouveau, fantasy, and steampunk art, but I am open to most subjects and themes. My strengths include human figures and portraits, animals, and nature scenes.
I’m not a technical draftsman, so illustrations that are heavy with exacting architecture or machinery such as cars, motorcycles, etc are not my strong points, and artwork containing them may require more time to complete.

The only subjects I absolutely will not draw are bestiality or depictions of minors in sexual situations, including nudity.

I reserve the right to decline any commission if I feel it’s not something I’m suited to illustrate, but I’m very open-minded and love a challenge!

What media do you use?
My work is pen and ink lineart with digital color - I like to combine traditional and digital media for optimal results and can achieve a variety of looks with the media..
Works can be of any size or any format, horizontal or vertical.

What do I receive when I purchase a commission?
All commissions include one 8.5x11 print and a digital copy of the artwork.
The original artwork is not included, but is often available as an optional purchase.
Extra 8.5x11 prints can be purchased for $5 per print.
Larger prints can be purchased for an additional fee of $10 and up depending on size.

How do I obtain the original artwork?
Originals are only available for the preliminary line art, since color is added digitally. If you think you might be interested in buying the original work, you must let me know upfront. This does not obligate you to purchase the original if you later change your mind, but it will guarantee that an original will be available.

The prospective cost of the original varies and can be provided with your commission quote.

Please note that purchasing the original art is not the same as purchasing the copyrights - you may not make or distribute prints or other merchandise from the original.

Can I use the artwork to make avatars/icons/web layouts?
You may use any art that you commission to create your own personal avatars, icons, and signature tags for forums, journals, etc. You may not sell or distribute them - they must be for personal use only.

If you’ve commissioned the artwork as a gift for someone, just let me know so that the usage rights can be assigned to the correct person.

Artwork may be used for website/blog layouts only if the original commission is made explicitly for that purpose. In some cases this may be determined to be a commercial commission, and will be priced accordingly.

Can I sell or give away prints or t-shirts of the artwork? Can I sell the art to someone else to use?
You may reproduce the artwork you commission for your own personal use only. If you would like to make additional prints for your own personal use or put the artwork on your own t-shirt, you may do so, but you cannot sell, give away, or otherwise distribute any prints or merchandise displaying the artwork.

Likewise, you cannot sell or give usage of the artwork to any third parties without prior permission.

You drew MY character, does that mean I own the copyright to the artwork?
Sorry, but no. Characters cannot be copyrighted, only trademarked. By commissioning me, you have given me permission to create a depiction of your character, so the copyrights to the artwork automatically belong to the artist. I retain the right to display the work in my online galleries and portfolios, and to display the work for self-promotional advertising. I will not sell use of the artwork to any third parties.

If you choose, you can request to purchase the copyrights and we can discuss the fees and terms for such a purchase, but this is typically only necessary if you want the artwork for commercial use.

Do I have to pay for the artwork upfront?
In most cases I will require a non-refundable deposit of $25 of the commission fee to begin work. Any remaining balance can be paid in two installments, half when the line art for your piece is completed, and the remainder when the artwork is fully completed.
Payment is accepted through Visa/Mastercard, Paypal, or U.S. Domestic money order.

What are your prices?
I no longer have a flat fee for commissions.
My rates average about $20 per hour depending on the time and materials required for your illustration.
If you are interested in getting a no obligation quote before you place an order, please email me with details about the artwork that you’d like to commission.

I will give you an estimate of the hours required and a price quote based on that time.
While I allow for minor changes as I work on a commission, any major changes that require a considerable additional time investment will require an additional fee.

As a rough estimate, a commission for a color digital picture of single character with background would be around $150.

The original line art can typically be purchased for an additional 50-100% of the commission fee.
